The Battery Park Chair Competition
Design Contest Seeks Just the Right Chair for Battery Park new green for 2014. More than 600 designs were submitted from independent designers, students and design studios from the American Continent. 5 were selected for fabrication to show at the Castle Clinton for public vote. The Maple Chair was selected among the top 5 designs.
The design inspiration comes from Battery Park’s history. All the way since there was nothing but forest and beach until now. From the native spices of flora that populated the island I subtracted the shapes of the leaves or flowers and made different patterns. My idea was to make the pattern the most similar to a lace fabric used on the 19th century to represent the history of wild life and people in one piece.
The form of the chair is meant to be simple and appealing to sit and enjoy of the park. The material is aluminum so it can be light, recycled and recyclable. At the same time is resistant to outdoors and light to move around.
